Skiing mountains landscape photography from  the Tyrolean towns and traditions to the terrain. With the familiarity and ski-in/ski-out comforts of well-groomed mountains in our own backyard, the thought of schlepping off to ski in Europe seems nonsensical—not to mention as daunting as a double-black-diamond run. The Swiss Alps are known for their storied resorts—snow-dusted, chocolate-box-pretty towns where excess comes with a side of skiing. In St. Moritz, they play polo on the frozen lake and wear chinchilla and sable fur instead of fleece.

When it comes to skiing, Austria has a rep for being a sort of jolly Alpine cliché—a place of lederhosen and sleigh rides, oompah bands, onion-domed churches, and old-fashioned ski areas best suited to beginners and families. Top of the pile is St. Anton. While it does indeed have an onion-domed church and a pretty main street promenade, it also has a state-of-the-art lift network and compelling modern Alpine architecture.
